Diplo and Mad Decent Records will celebrate 10th year of concerts

Mad Decent Block Party will celebrate 10 years of shows this summer. Mad Decent delivered annual tours nationwide for years. In drastic contrast, they’re only playing two cities in 2017. They will host one on July 7th in Philadelphia, their origin city, and the other Labor Day Weekend at Red Rocks in Denver, an ultimate destination for many concert goers. In honor of the anniversary, tickets were sold in pairs for only $10. Consequentially, both events are sold out.

Each event appears unique in its own right. The lineups for either city we’re curated individually with their specific venues and fans in mind. The party at Red Rocks announced Major Lazer, Cashmere Cat, Alison Wonderland, and Slumberjack in their lineup. Philadelphia’s roster boasts 4B, Diplo, Dirty South Joe, Flosstradamus, Matt Ox, Nadastrom, SNKM, and Swizzymack.

In the wake of 2017’s over-saturated festival market, events face low attendance and cancellation. In reaction, Diplo plans to shift focus on the attendees by concentrating production efforts on only two parties. Mad Decent’s Instagram verbalizes the mission:

“Due to the overwhelming amount of festivals and dance events that now exist, talent and venues are limited for an event that is meant to be affordable to the masses. Because we only want to deliver a quality experience in a few markets this year, we have chosen to dial back Mad Decent Block Party to Philly and Denver for 2 special 10th anniversary events.”

We put together an incredible lineup for our return to Red Rocks –  @MajorLazer, @CashmereCat and @alisonwonderland to name a few – and all proceeds from Philly’s block party will be benefit Beyond The Bars, a Philadelphia-based nonprofit dedicated to bringing musical equipment and instruction to incarcerated and underserved youth.

The Mad Decent Block Parties started with nothing but “Twenty dollars, and a permit from the city,” says Diplo. Their first block party in Philadelphia, 2008, was free and open to all ages. It took place on the same street Diplo lived at the time. The organizers only anticipated a few hundred to attend. 2000 showed up. Diplo recalls feeling a sense of community as people came out in droves to dance for free in their neighborhood.  People brought out BBQ grills and lawn chairs. They hauled in swimming pools for the kids. When the show concluded, everyone even helped clean up the trash.  “It was the most peaceful party I’ve ever seen in my life” Diplo tells.

Check out the video below to hear Diplo recount the spirit of the neighborhood and the attitude Mad Decent strived to maintain throughout a decade of shows.

In an effort to maintain a more conscious attitude, all proceeds from this year’s Philadelphia block party will benefit Beyond The Bars, a Philadelphia-based nonprofit dedicated to bringing musical equipment and instruction to incarcerated and underserved youth.

Mad Decent Block Party is produced by Mad Decent records. The label, founded by Diplo in 2006, supports artists Major Lazer, Dillon Francis, Slushii, Yellow Claw, Zeds Dead, and many more.
