Event review: Paul Oakenfold at New Daisy
Another legend walked down the world famous Beale Street on May 20th, right before putting on a show that some have been waiting years, maybe even their whole lives to see. Paul Oakenfold, the two time Grammy award and two time World Music Award nominee brought out trance fans from all over the mid south for his Generations world tour, and he did not disappoint!

In Memphis, where the nightlife tends to be pretty cliquey, it was refreshing to walk in to Daisyland at the New Daisy and see people of all different walks of life letting loose and having the time of their lives. There is something about electronic music that everyone, no matter what they are going through, can relate to. I feel this was a huge theme on Saturday night as everyone hung out, danced, and waited for the king of trance to take the stage. In the meantime, I ran into friends I hadn’t seen in over 10 years, friends I hadn’t seen in 5 years, and friends I thought I would never see again. It was a night full of fun, dancing, and reminiscing with old friends. For that reason alone, this show was one of the best I’ve attended here in Memphis.

Attending a trance show was a new musical experience for me, and my lack of knowledge about this kind of music had me skeptical. I’ve been living my whole life thinking I didn’t like trance! However, from the moment I walked into the venue, I felt the awesome energy of the crowd, and Tree Riehl aka DJ Tree had the the whole club grooving right up until the king took his place on the stage. Everyone was so excited!
Coming from someone who has never given this kind of music a chance, I was completely blown away by this show. From the high energy of the music, to the melodic transitions from one song to the next, to the light show that was completely out of this world, I loved every single thing about this show. I have officially fallen in love with trance music. Thank you Paul Oakenfold, Memphis loves you!
