Karin Dreijer Andersson is the woman behind Fever Ray, the second-half of now-defunct sibling duo, The Knife. A secluded mother of two who resides in Sweden, she typically stays out of the media spotlight. However, with the release of her 2017 album, Plunge, available on Rabid Records, Fever Ray will finally return to North America for the first time in eight years.
Only a handful of locations are slated across the U.S. and Canada, including her first appearance at California’s Lightning In A Bottle. Tickets went on sale January 26th and are available for purchase here!
Fever Ray earned her reputation with the claustrophobic, yet spiritually reverberant self-titled album release in 2009. The record paints a spectrum of ethereal sounds while the lyrics reflect on the boredom of newly found motherhood.
On her latest album, Plunge, Fever Ray changes her tone. It steps out from between the confines of “Concrete Walls” and heads “To The Moon and Back”. Expanding sounds support the emotional undertones which reflect on everything from BDSM, politics, and how sex is the only thing that will save our country.
H bombs fall on “Wanna Sip”. Synthesisers imitate the buzzing noise of the projectiles at the beginning of “Cry Cry Cry”, but the only mass destruction weapon of mass destruction is Karin Dreijer’s voice. This Swedish artist had already chewed and spat out poison on The Knife’s last record, but the exorcism comes now. On every corner of this labyrinth one hears a disturbed and disturbing shriek. On every corner another minotaur to face and overcome. A political, feminist and sexual manifesto where pop goes hand in hand with unease. – Prima Vera Sound
Fever Ray doesn’t discuss much with the media, but she recently spoke with The Guardian to talk about motherhood, the new album, and how after divorcing her husband, she seems to be experimenting with everything from kink to homosexuality. Also, she spoke with Stereogum to explain how homemade BDSM and the politics of sex influenced Fever Ray’s Plunge aesthetic.
Beyond North America, Fever Ray will be treating Europe favorably to a lengthy 2018 tour, and many festival stops including Spain’s stacked Primavera Sound festival.
