Australian artist Mild Minds, born in Melbourne as Benjamin David Plant, is continuing his growth in the lo-fi electronic music scene. His track “SWIM”, remixed by ford., received a ‘Best Remixed Recording’ nomination at the 2020 Grammys. The original track is in his upcoming debut album MOOD, set to release on March 13. Mild Minds participated in his first North American mini tour last week, in which he opened up for Tycho on three shows. He performed at The Wiltern in Los Angeles on Feb. 3, Catalyst Club in Santa Cruz on Feb. 4, and Fox Theater in Oakland on Feb. 5. In fact, here is the review of his performance at Catalyst Club on Tuesday, Feb. 4, 2020.
California dreamin’ with an Australian electronic twist
The Catalyst Club is located in the beautiful Northern California coastal city of Santa Cruz. It is a laid-back entertainment venue that generally host indie singers and rock bands but occasionally, electronic artists perform there too. Although the main star of the Feb. 4 show was Tycho, Mild Minds provided the cool vibes to kick off the night when he opened up the show.
As the attendance at Catalyst Club increased, Mild Minds produced sequenced, experimental rhythms that hooked the audience. Though he only played for the first 45 minutes of the show, his music got people nodding their heads back and forth and even got some people grooving to the flows. Mild Minds’ vocals also enhanced the mood inside Catalyst Club, which already couldn’t wait for Tycho’s onstage arrival.
New single, “Walls”, and album announcement
On Feb. 5, 2020, Mild Minds released his latest single, “WALLS”, and it is now available on every streaming platform. Accompanying him is the vocalist Boats and Boats’ vocals give the track an emotionally-charged ambience. “WALLS” is a track that merge political situations with personal viewpoints which also contain elements of UK garage and ambient electronica. Mild Minds explained the track’s meaning in his own words:
The meaning behind ‘WALLS’ is somewhat dichotomous, we wanted the track to have a dual meaning depending on the listener. Boats wanted the message to be somewhat political, a nod to the issues happening at the American border, whilst I wanted to reference the more internal and interpersonal walls we build every day“.Mild Minds
The track is included in Mild Minds’ debut album, MOOD, set to release on March 13, 2020. MOOD also include the singles that he already released recently, “MOVEMENTS” and “EMBRACER“, as well as the aforementioned “SWIM”. Fans and interested listeners can follow Mild Minds on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Spotify, Soundcloud, Apple Music, and their official website.
