Woodstock’s 50th Anniversary Celebration In Watkins Glen

Party Like It’s 1969

In 1969, 400,000 people converged in a small New York town called Bethel for a three-day music festival. That festival is Woodstock and it was a celebration of three days of peace and music. The festival’s harmonious nature contrasted the turbulent events of the 1960s such as the Vietnam War. Some of the performers who performed in the festival included Janis Joplin and Jimi Hendrix. The New York Times calls Woodstock a defining moment in the counterculture movement, especially its influence on pop music.

50 Years Later

Finally, Michael Lang, the co-founder of Woodstock 1969, announced the festival’s return for its 50th anniversary celebration. Woodstock 2019’s dates are from August 16th to 18th in Watkins Glen, New York, 150 miles from Bethel. In particular, some observers became surprised that Bethel is not the hosting site like it was in 1969. Although Watkins Glen is bigger, Lang stated that Bethel would still “remain close to our hearts”. Furthermore, Lang also says that Woodstock 2019 would retain the spirit and energy of the 1969 festival. Above all, Lang added that Woodstock 2019’s main goal is promoting activism, particularly climate change and social justice.

Hope For Woodstock 2019

One hope that Michael Lang has for Woodstock 2019 is that it will not turn out like Woodstock 1999. To explain, Woodstock’s 30th-anniversary celebration had problems ranging from heat exhaustion to injuries caused by mosh pits. Other problems occurred at Woodstock 1999 include overflowing portable toilets, drug overdose, and allegations of sexual assault. Also, Woodstock 2019 faces competition from a festival called, “Bethel Woods Music and Culture Festival” in Bethel Woods. In conclusion, that festival is hosted by Live Nation Concerts, INVNT, andis also celebrating Woodstock’s 50th anniversary.
