KURA is a DJ and Producer from Portugal. On tour and in the studio, this newer name in House music is distinguishing himself as a talent. Furthermore, his roster of releases counts at over 40 original tracks and remixes combined. KURA shares his musical talents in more ways than one because he also teaches. As such, he lead a tech masterclass for Amsterdam Dance Event 2017.
This guy is an all around success. For the past few years, KURA has won titles including Best Portuguese DJ at Radio Nova Era’s Best of 2014 Awards, 61st position among the DJ Mag’s Top 100 in 2015, and the number one spot in the Beatport charts for his collaboration with Hardwell entitled “Calavera” in 2016, and capping off 2017 at position 48 in DJ Mag’sTop 100 rankings.
Strong and consistent in the studio and on the stage, KURA is a champion artist. 2018 sees him continuing his successful career with his most recent accomplishment: the release single “Lambo” on Tiësto‘sMusical Freedom Label as of May 28, 2018. He has the stamina to endure the most demanding performances that amount to 7 world tours including appearances at Tomorrowland, and Ultra Europe. Perhaps, a lesser known name, but certainly as involved, talented, accomplished and as promising as the artists that come to mind when one thinks “EDM”. KURA stands out among the best artists in EDM.
Indulge in KURA’s words about his experiences as an artist from the interview piece below. Take a moment to hit that play button from the exclusive mix as well. KURA is in the spotlight here on One EDM.
ONE EDM: WHO AND WHAT INSPIRED YOU TO FOLLOW YOUR PATH IN MUSIC?
KURA: A lot of artists have influenced me over the years, but the one who got me hooked on dance music has to be Carl Cox. I was introduced to electronic music through his album, ‘F.A.C.T. 2’
WHEN YOU ARE NOT CREATING OR LISTENING TO ELECTRONIC MUSIC, WHAT KIND OF MUSIC WOULD SOMEONE FIND YOU LISTENING TO ON A RANDOM MORNING OR EVENING?
I don’t like to limit myself to genres so I can just go on Spotify and start browsing listening to hip hop, punk rock, indie, dance, as long as it’s good music doesn’t matter what the genre is.
ARE THERE ANY FESTIVALS OR GATHERINGS YOU’RE LOOKING FORWARD TO ATTENDING AND PLAYING AT THIS YEAR?
Tomorrowland has to be the one I’m most excited about! It’s going to be my 3rd year I’m super excited
WHAT WOULD YOU SAY IS YOUR FAVORITE PART OF MAKING MUSIC?
Probably the power to touch people with something you do at home, or in my case, a room. Music can travel anywhere, brings people together, it’s my biggest form of expression.
DO YOU HAVE ANY DREAM DESTINATIONS TO PERFORM AT?
I’ve been fortunate enough to play almost everywhere in the world, but I would like to tour Australia, I’ve never done that! Should be fun!
WHAT HAS BEEN YOUR FAVORITE FESTIVAL TO PERFORM AT SO FAR?
It’s impossible to choose there’s so many cool festivals, so many emotions shared. I can highlight, Ultra, Tomorrowland, RFM Somnii, Storm Festival, EDP beach party… there are so many, it’s really hard to choose.
WHAT HAS BEEN THE MOST SATISFYING ACHIEVEMENT SO FAR?
Coming from literally zero, everything I’ve achieved is due to my productions/DJ sets, and of course the help of my team who gives me advice, takes care of me and keeps me motivated.
APART FROM EDM, WHAT DO YOU LIKE TO DO?
I love to play games, when I’m not making music or playing, I’m on games like Fortnite, FIFA.
IN LIFE AND MUSIC, WHAT WOULD YOU CONSIDER YOUR BIGGEST STRUGGLES?
It’s very hard to stay away from family, travelling so much takes a big chunk of your body, you are deprived of sleep most of the time. It’s very important to surround yourself with people that only keep you motivated and mentally healthy, it’s a grind if you wanna do this long term.
IS THERE ANYTHING ELSE YOU WOULD LIKE TO TALK ABOUT?
Just want to thank you guys for the interview, hope you keep updated with all the new music that’s coming, peace =)
