Renowned Dutch producer chats to One EDM after impressive set at Creamfields Festival

Nicky Romero is a household name within the music industry. For years he has cultivated and grown a fan base through his memorable original productions, innovative remixes, and collaborations with a slew of different artists. Just a week ago he ranked at Number 43 in the 2018 DJ Mag Top 100 DJ poll announced recently at Amsterdam Dance Event (ADE). In addition, he performed at yet another sold out Protocol X ADE 2018 label night.

To add to that his record label Protocol Recordings is now a well-respected institution that has become a haven for some of the biggest and smallest names in the industry. Nicky supports various genres of music through his label which culminates in an eclectic array of music.

In 2018 alone Nicky Romero has collaborated with a staggering number of talented artists including Steve Aoki, Taio Cruz, Stadium X, ROZES and most recently Deniz Koyu.

His radio show Protocol Radio is going from strength to strength and is currently syndicated in over 100 countries globally. It is also available worldwide on iTunes and YouTube.

One EDM caught up with the Dutch producer after his set at Creamfields Festival to discuss his new music, life lessons and future goals.

Your track with Stadium X “Rise”

It’s the follow up to “Harmony” which we did together a couple of years back (2015-2016). I’m trying to keep up the collabs with Stadium X because I believe in the guys and they’ve delivered so many great records for Protocol. I really think they stand for progressive house at its best so we’re trying to keep that thing going every year. I like to work with them a lot.

Future dream collaborations

I’m always happy to hit the studio with the guys from Coldplay. I hope that will happen some time in the future because I’m a huge fan. I’m also very thankful to have worked with so many artists to date. I never would have believed this would have happened. If you’d have told me this 20 years ago, as a young kid that wanted to play the drums I would not have believed you.

There are many other artists that I look up to but one other would be Deadmau5. I think he is a genius. He is one of the most creative people I know.

A rising star you’re watching

There are so many. Matisee & Sadko did a really great job with a song on my label Protocol Recordings and they did a really great track with Raiden called “Light Me Up”. Florian Picasso is about to drop a new track on our label which I really like. Deniz Koyu is coming back with some great stuff and just produced a great with Thomas Gold. There is also a new one with David Guetta

One track to play in your sets for your career

It would have to be “I Could Be the One” with Avicii because it’s a mixture of memories I have with that song  and also because Avicii is not with us anymore. A lot of people also love that record. Those factors combined make it very special.

Your most significant life lesson

It would be to let it go.  I used to think I could control the whole world and you just can’t. Live with the day and allow things to happen even if they go wrong

Plans for 2018/2019

More touring, Asia and America are next. A holiday and of course Amsterdam Dance Event.
