CNN made a tweet about the tragic news of the death at Bonnaroo Music and Arts Festival on Sunday, June 16, 2019. Below is the post to the official Bonnaroo Twitter page.
The sad nature of the news report
This is sad news. Tragic news. More importantly it is worthy of reporting because a human life ended. In today’s social climate death in the news is widely reported on from warfare, terrorism, severe weather, whatever the reason it is meant to inform those of the human condition and state of affairs influencing one’s well-being. This festival is meant for having the time of your life. Moreover, the notion of a death happening in such a festival is shattering news. A life was lost.
Heinous social media responses to the news report
Such sympathy was not immediately given to this news of the death for among the tweets in response to the post by CNN. Cynicism, apathy, and outright rude commentary about the news rules the majority of posts among the tweets. Claims that it was not worthy of reporting as “national news” and the insensitive rhetorical question asked “Why is this breaking national news?” is clearly intended to demerit the post by CNN. True colors are showing in these tweets and they are ugly.
Death at Bonnaroo
In the report, a 27 year old man in attendance at Bonnaroo was met by a team of medical responders working at the festival on the evening of Saturday, June 15, 2019. The man had a medical condition but the cause of death was not reported. Furthermore, the man’s father in attendance with him helped get the attention of the medical staff to tend to his son. Ultimately, the man died.
Furthermore, the tragic news of the death at this year’s Bonnaroo Music and Art’s Festival is not the first time a death has occurred at the festival. Last year, a festival attendee died while on festival grounds due to drug overdose.
Social responsibility demonstrated by Bonnaroo Music and Arts Festival
Amidst the sad news, much happiness and celebration of life at Bonnaroo: Gay Pride Parades, the State Farm Neighborhood of Good charity supporting music education for youth, and the Refill Revolution Plastic Pollution Coalition initiative for keeping people hydrated while reducing the impact of waste on the environment.
Clearly, Bonnaroo Music and Arts Festival is taking social responsibility in more ways than one. The juxtaposition of all the positive activities to help people live better lives against the death of the the man at Bonnaroo is sad. This festival is open to all and everyone, and Bonnaroo takes steps to promote their well-being. This is a serious motive, and the news of the death is no laughing matter; however, the opposite of this was largely communicated in the anti-social tweets back to the original post by CNN to the official Bonnaroo Twitter page.
