Introducing Rising Teenage Artist, Genevieve Stokes

Piano lessons, open-mic nights, and concerts with the family in Portland, Maine—music has been in Genevieve Stokes’ life since childhood. At eight-years-old, Stokes knew she was destined for a career in the music industry when she started writing songs. The lyrics soon paired up with instrumentals from the very piano that Genevieve’s sister opened on her birthday. Stokes learned her taste in music from her parents who enjoyed piano-playing-artists like Regina Spektor and Fiona Apple. Although, it wasn’t until last year that Genevieve took her singing to the next level.

Musical influences

Now 18-years-old, Stokes continues to strengthen her lyricism and creativity on a professional scale. Many listeners believe her vocals to mirror the sound such as Bon Iver, Frank Ocean, and Big Thief’s Adrianne Lenker. The aforementioned artists even influenced Stokes’ acoustic and electronic elements. But one thing is for sure; no artist can hold a candle to “Stokes’ songs which always paint the emotional picture.

“Running Away”

Her most recent single, “Running Away,” tells the story of developing feelings for a significant other. Listeners of all ages can follow Genevieve’s emotional journey as if it’s their own. Listen to “Running Away,” with caution, because the tune may resurface old memories.

The music-producing couple

Amid Coronavirus chaos, Stokes and her boyfriend are sheltering in place while reveling in home-cooked meals. Since Stokes’ beau attends college and produces music at the same time, they always write up several songs every day.

Potential star in the making

Alt-pop hits, such as “Running Away,” “Surface Tension,” and “Morning Dove,” only skim the surface of Genevieve’s potential-—evident by her upcoming debut EP that is set to release this summer.
