This has been the season of rain for festival season and Sloss Music and Arts Festival was no exception. Even in the rain, people showed up, enjoyed the music and the vibes and all that was offered. As an avid festival goer, I’ve been to festivals all over the world, so when I look at adding new ones, I choose them based on uniqueness, fun location and talent. Sloss brings all of this and more.
This year they brought in Odesza, Waka Flocka Flame, Tycho, Phantogram, and Cashmere Cat along with many more eclectic indie rock bands to EDM acts. Add the Sloss furnace venue offering hands on pouring to special VIP lounge areas with Tito Vodka and Star Hill Brewery. Along with different levels of experience tickets for any financial level, you find a great well thought out travel worthy festival.
I had the pleasure of listening to Cashmere Cat at Tomorrow World, so when I saw that he was on the line-up along with Odesza at Sloss, I knew this year was the year the EDM culture would be embraced. Sloss is a traditionally indie rock music and arts festival. Magnus August Høiberg aka Cashmere Cat, is a Norwegian DJ, record producer, musician and turntablist. He is best known for producing songs for various artists, as well as remixing and editing songs from those respective artists as well. He also represented Norway in the DMC World DJ Championships as DJ Final from 2006 to 2009. His debut EP, Mirror Maru, released in October 2012, gained recognition from several other producers. ODESZA (Harrison Mills, Clayton Knight) is one of the most celebrated groups in electronic music, winning over fans online and at their consistently sold-out live shows. They have started their world wide tour and the South’s only shot of seeing them was Sloss Music and Arts Festival. Even with the pouring rain for most of the day, the dedicated fans still held onto their one and only hope to witness Odesza live. The weather held up and everyone was able to enjoy this headliner’s set. For more info on them, make sure to check out their website: http://odesza.com/
Sloss is currently the only twentieth-century blast furnace in the U.S. being preserved and interpreted as a historic industrial site. The dramatic scale and complexity of the plant’s industrial structure, machines and tools make the Sloss collection a unique contribution to the interpretation of twentieth-century ironmaking technology and presents a remarkable perspective on the era when America grew to world industrial dominance. At the same time, Sloss is an important reminder of the hopes and struggles of the people who worked in the industries that made some men wealthy, and Birmingham the “Magic City.
Make sure to put Sloss Music and Art Festival on your list of must experiences.
Check out one of their unique experiences:
Sloss has 4 different stages including an area under an overpass which worked out perfect during the storm to help shelter festival goers.
Blast, Steam, Seasick and Shed. All of them unique in their own right. The most notable one was the Steam one that was in a large hangar that gave cover to festival goers. All of the other stages didn’t have shelter but had VIP tents, activities like cornhole, ping pong and lots of vendors spread around. The vendors included ones with art pieces, jewelry, food, TSA pre-check sign-up and many more. Overall this festival is a must experience and hopefully next year the weather will be improved.
